Which Way Should a Ceiling Fan Turn?
The direction your ceiling fan spins makes a real difference to how effective it is throughout the year. Here’s what you need to know for each season in Perth.
In the Summer
Anticlockwise (Counter-Clockwise)
In summer, set your ceiling fan to spin anticlockwise when viewed from below. This pushes air straight down, creating a wind-chill effect on your skin that makes the room feel several degrees cooler – without actually lowering the temperature. This is the most efficient way to stay comfortable without leaning on your air conditioner. On cooler summer evenings, a fan on its own is often all you need.
In the Winter
Clockwise
In winter, reverse the direction to clockwise and run the fan on its lowest speed. Warm air naturally rises and pools near the ceiling. A clockwise rotation draws cool air up from floor level and gently redistributes the warm air back down along the walls – improving heat distribution and reducing your reliance on heaters.
Most ceiling fans have a small reverse switch on the motor housing, or it can be done via remote on DC fans.
